We are absolutely excited to host an evening with the very special guests from the Heartquarters of the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS): Dr. Cassandra Vieten, IONS President/CEO, and Dr. Katia Petersen, IONS Executive Director of Education. It is a rare opportunity for our community to meet, interact, and explore the possibilities of a better future. 

Dr. Vieten is the youngest president IONS has ever had, and brings refreshing new energy and direction to the 41-year-old organization of IONS. Dr. Petersen had been serving as the Senior Educational Advisor to IONS' Worldview Exploration Project prior to becoming Executive Director of Education. 

Dr. Vieten and Dr. Petersen will share the latest news and directions of the IONS with us. Then we will open up the floor and have a more interactive dialogue, exploring the future together. Why IONS now? What could the IONS role be to manifest a better world? How could noetic communities, locally and internationally, connect and work together towards our vision?

What unique perspectives could our region contribute?

 Biographies:

Cassandra Vieten, PhD, is President/CEO of the Institute of Noetic Sciences. Previously she served as Executive Director of Research. She is a licensed clinical psychologist, co-director of the Mind-Body Medicine Research Group at California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute, and co-president of the Institute for Spirituality and Psychology.

Her research has focused on spirituality and health; mindfulness-based approaches to cultivating emotional balance; and psychospiritual transformation to a more meaningful, compassionate, and service-oriented way of life. She completed pre- and post-doctoral research training at the University of California, San Francisco, working on the biological and psychological underpinnings of addiction and alcoholism.

She received her PhD in clinical psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies, where her clinical training focused on the integration of Eastern philosophy and spirituality into psychotherapy. She has conducted workshops, groups, and individual psychotherapy with victims of trauma, adolescent, adult and pregnant drug addicts, violent offenders, transgendered and HIV+ individuals, and adults seeking personal growth.

She is co-author of Living Deeply: The Art and Science of Transformation in Everyday Life (New Harbinger/Noetic Books 2008) and author of Mindful Motherhood: Practical Tools for Staying Sane During Pregnancy and Your Child's First Year (New Harbinger/Noetic Books 2009).

Katia Petersen, PhD, award winning author and training expert in school improvement strategies brings powerful skills to her role as Executive Director of Education at the Institute Of Noetic Sciences, IONS.  She is an expert in integrating social-emotional and academic learning. Her work has encompassed leadership and staff coaching, student and teacher support, as well as parent engagement and community involvement. She has delivered professional development in schools nationwide and trained over 65,000 educators and thousands of parents to enhance school success. 

Dr. Petersen is featured in the 14-part video series entitled Teaching Students to Get Along, distributed nationally as a distance-learning course through seven colleges and universities which won a Teacher’s MagazineTeacher’s Choice: 1996 Excellence in the Classroom award. She co-authored a book of the same title, released in fall 1995, which was rated #5 by the National Association of Elementary School Principals in the Top Ten Books of 1996.  Dr. Petersen created and implemented an innovative statewide program in Minnesota called The SafeTeam to prevent bullying and harassment while promoting student assets. The program won both the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Best of the Best Children’s Television Award and the National Association of Broadcasters National Service to Children’s Television Award in Washington, DC.

Katia’s work focuses on systems change, collaborative processing of organizational needs, creative planning, conflict resolution and mediation. A skilled dialogue practitioner, Katia draws upon a wide range of emergent processes that support effective group worksen had been serving as the Senior Educational Advisor to IONS' Worldview Explorations Project.

From NE 45th St, in the U District, turn south onto Roosevelt.

Just after 42nd St. and right before the University Bridge,

you will see a small alley-like, one-way street, named NE Campus Pkway.

Turn right.

At the end of this alley, directly ahead, is the University Friends Center
